Healthcare is shaped not only by research and technology, but also by the ways people communicate, create, advocate, and care for one another.
Healthcare Innovations: UK Edition is a studyaway program that invites students to explore healthcare innovation across the United Kingdom, in everyday life, and in their own lives through site visits, hands-on sessions, readings, discussions, and various writing-intensive projects
Students combine research, observation, discussion, reading, hands-on learning, critical thinking, creativity, and storytelling to develop their own public-facing healthcare communication projects.
Student PSA Posters
As part of the course, students design public service announcement posters addressing healthcare topics that matter to them. These projects draw upon health-related topics of interest while using concise language, visual storytelling, and thoughtful design to reach a public audience.
Explore the gallery to see how students transform complex healthcare ideas into clear, engaging, and meaningful messages.
Digital Museum Exhibits
For their final projects, students create digital museum exhibits that explore a healthcare topic through research, storytelling, and multimedia design.
Each exhibit brings together a carefully curated collection of sources, objects, images, media, and written interpretation. Rather than simply presenting information, students guide visitors through a meaningful story about health, illness, medicine, care, or healthcare innovation.
These projects ask students to think like researchers, writers, designers, and curators. They consider how individual artifacts work together, whose perspectives are represented, what stories may be missing, and how digital spaces can make complex healthcare topics accessible and engaging for public audiences.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
The United Kingdom becomes an extended classroom throughout the program. Students connect course concepts to the places they visit, the public messages they encounter, and the conversations they have along the way.
Together, these experiences encourage students to see healthcare innovation broadly—not only as the development of new treatments and technologies, but also as the creation of better stories, stronger connections, and more effective ways of communicating care.
About the Program
Healthcare Innovations: UK Edition is led by Dr. Lindsey Harding and Dr. Eric Yip in July 2026. The program was developed by Dr. Harding and Dr. Carrie Pucko over the course of the 25-26 academic year, and it brings together healthcare communication, science writing, innovation, biology, and experiential learning. We are incredibly grateful to our University of Leeds colleagues for collaborating with us to design, develop, and run this program. A huge thank you to Ben Oldham, Katie Wootton, Katie O’Neill, and Lisa Beare.
